Answer for: What would you like to see in a freshly delivered VPS regardless of CP supplier? (aka Plesky CPs)

#1 Accurate Reporting

A CP that accurately reports my configuration as it really is, not how how it might be based on details it has stored in a database.

This is definitely annoying and I join you in wishing it different.

On the other hand, the only alternative I see is parsing the configuration files, which, being time-consuming to program, would conceivably increase the cost of the control panel. Also, it is more likely that a database remains in a "known" state; I think it would be all too common for you and me to tweak a configuration file, only to make it unintelligible to the control panel's parser.

Which is the better of two festering oozes?

If a CP fails to manage, control, apply and accurately report the configuration it's in charge of and keep it in a "known" state then it's not of merchantable quality, i.e., not fit for purpose.

If the current price is a reflection of reasonable expectations being met then conceivably the costs shouldn't increase, though getting it right doesn't appear to be the driving force for some of the commercial developers.

Applying a configuration based on one held in a database, then commenting and uncommenting is flawed but it is one way, while parsing a configuration, which has it's own set of problems, is another way. Neither of these "festering oozes" are ideal, and I have in mind a third, much better way :)

Opps! end of thread :P can't reply 'cos there's no after a reply to a reply :(

If I tell you here, then do I not as per the terms of service "grant Modwest, Inc. a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works ... " based on my IPR? and if I must "agree not to copy, reverse-engineer, exploit, create a derivative work of the Service, or otherwise infringe upon our (Modwests) intellectual property rights" does that apply if the thing is based on my IPR?

Right, comment replies only go one level "deep", and so the workaround is to reply to the original and it'll appear at the bottom of the same thread.

I can see how those TOS quotes might seem to conflict but I don't think they do.

The broad purpose of this site is to help Modwest offer better services. The "license grant" stuff means that while everyone owns the words and ideas they post here, doing so grants Modwest the right to use those ideas to improve our services. But you own your ideas, of course.

The "reverse-engineer" paragraph refers to the Feedback Community itself -- we're asking that visitors refrain from making copy-cat sites or stealing the Feedback Community programming code.

If you have proprietary/commercially valuable ideas and want to afford them maximum protection, we are very curious and interested to discuss them in a non-disclosure/consulting context (rather than this public forum). You have my email address. :)

Maybe place the reply and the link just to the left of the thumbs down so that every comment can be replied to without a need for a workaround. Replies could also be nested in relation to the comment they apply to, folding and unfolding a group from a single line, plus less of an indent.

I do understand the broad purpose of the site, though I think the TOS would benefit from some disambiguation so there's unequivocal clarity of intention and meaning.

Yes, I have your email address and a very fair non-disclosure agreement should I feel the need to protect one of my an unrealized commercial ideas ;) I'll bear your curiosity in mind each time I revisit the CP idea that battling with Plesk drew out.
